Russell Fraser knows firsthand the importance of having a good insurance policy and a broker you can trust. The president and founder of Nickel City Insurance Brokers suffered a traumatic accident that resulted in the loss of his right eye.
“Fortunately, I had a great auto insurance policy, but more importantly, a great broker. He fought very hard for me to receive all the benefits my policy offers. This is what made the difference and what motivated me to pursue a career in the insurance industry. I wanted to make the same difference in the lives of others, ”he says.
“My story is not isolated. There are so many people who are injured in car crashes every day and need a strong advocate, ”he says. “Of course, you would think that the insurance broker’s job is to intervene and help after an accident, which often happens, but the best brokers are those who intervene before an accident.
Fraser and his team make sure their clients know and understand all of their coverage options, so they can make informed choices that can have a huge impact on their lives.
“While it’s unfortunate that traffic accidents and property claims do occur, we pride ourselves on standing up to our customers in these stressful and difficult times,” he says.
The broker firmly believes that having the right team in your area at all times will make this life changing difference because that is what he has experienced personally.
All about the family
Fraser’s story is also a family story. He comes from a close-knit family, with two very loving and hardworking parents, who instilled strong core values in himself and his brother from an early age. Raising the Fraser boys to understand the importance of honesty, loyalty and hard work has surely paid off.
Born and raised in Sudbury, Fraser received his business degree in Michigan and moved to South Florida where he met and married the love of his life. When the couple started to think about starting a family, they knew it was important to find the right place.
“It was then that I knew I was coming home to Sudbury, the place that shares the same values with which we wanted to raise our children. It’s not just the place, but the people too. We are really proud of what our community has to offer, ”he says.
When Fraser moved in 2008 he needed new home and auto insurance policies, so he spoke to a friend who had worked in the industry for decades. The world of insurance, his friend says, gives you the opportunity to make a real difference in people’s lives and he has found his career to be very rewarding. Fraser was intrigued because it really aligned with his own personal values, and he believed this was his chance to be able to make a difference.
“The help I received from my insurance broker really changed my life, and I knew this was my golden chance to help change the lives of other people too, for the better,” Fraser said. From that day on, he began nine months of expert training, fell in love with the insurance industry and launched his career.
He opened his first brokerage in March 2009 alongside two other seasoned brokers. In 2011, he opened another brokerage in Toronto, which focused on group insurance in Ontario and Atlantic Canada.
In early 2015, he opened Nickel City Insurance Brokerage, merging all of these companies. Thanks to the diverse background and experience of the team, they have really excelled over the years.
Nickel City Insurance Brokers is one of the few local family brokerage firms in Sudbury and offers over 125 years of combined insurance knowledge. The business is based on the fundamentals of real life experience, knowledge, trust, honesty and humility. They are also known for the personal approach they take with clients, treating them as they would their own family members.
“Family comes first,” says Fraser, “and at NCIB our customers are an extension of our family. Perhaps that’s why Nickel City has been voted Sudbury’s Favorite Insurance Brokerage, winning the coveted Readers’ Choice award three years in a row.
According to Fraser, “Starting a business here was more than a business; it was about being able to give back to the place that has given us so much.
